Advantages of Herb Powder

01/

It’s closer to its natural form
Using herbs that have been ground and dried is similar to how you would use rice, flour or any other food that has had it's water removed. The curry powder you cook with, or the cumin and cayenne pepper, these are powdered herbs too. When using these powders the freshness and fragrance exudes as you get closer to it.

02/

Absorption and speed
Preparing herbal powders at homes would mean you'll have to grind the herbs in a millet and sieve it a few times to ensure it's a fine powder. The benefits of fine powders are the particles are very small meaning the body can easily absorb it and its nutrients.

03/

Powdered herbs are easy to take
Herbal powders are very versatile and convenient. They can be easily added to smoothies, juices, cereals, teas, coffees or just consumed with a shot of water. You can even cook and bake with powdered herbs, make a protein herbal pancake or a herbal cake. The options are endless!

04/

Tastes great
Powdered blends give you the opportunity to enjoy the full flavours and textures present in the original herb. It's the herbalist's job to curate and create these herbal powders for not only the therapeutic benefits but also for its deep flavours and tastes. You can also create your own powders at home and experiment.

How to Take Herbal Powder

Most powdered herbs come from the roots or rhizome for internal use, with high absorbency and nutrient density. There are many ways to use herbal powder. You can swallow directly with bulk powder. But it can't be swallowed without water, which will increase the burden of the stomach. It is also a good way to use herbal powders in your food to provide nutrition through your daily diet. Use turmeric, cinnamon, paprika and other seasonings to cook to enhance the flavor, making it easy to incorporate into your herbal practice. In addition, herbal powder can be added to juices, smoothies, honey, milk and other beverages. The latter two methods are more able to mask some of the unpleasant taste of the herbs themselves.

Other ways to take herbal powders include capsule packaging. Encapsulation of bulk herbal powder into empty capsules makes it easy to take and carry. If the amount of bulk is large, a capsule machine can also be purchased for packaging. This is also one of the commonly used methods. A slightly more complicated method is to make tinctures. Mix the herbal powders together in a bottle or jar and add enough alcohol to cover the herbs. Mix them evenly and store them in a sealed form. Tinctures can be stored stably for a long time, but it is usually not very tasty.

General Guidelines for Using Herbal Powders

Make sure that your herbal powders are medicinally potent by using them within six to nine months of when they were ground up. Some herbal powders degrade much quicker and all will last better when stored in an air-tight container in a cold and dark place (like a refrigerator).

Start with single powders before moving onto blends. I recommend this all the time, not just for herbal powders. If you really want to track and understand how an herb is affecting you, using them one at a time is one of the clearest ways of achieving this.

Dosage varies widely depending on a person constitution as well as condition. 1/4 teaspoon - 1 teaspoon (or roughly 1 to 4 grams) 1 to 3 times a day is a relatively standard dose. It’s always best to consult your materia medica and/or herbal practitioner for dosage guidelines as well as listening to your body.
